• Sela Pass: At 13,700 feet, this high mountain pass is the gateway to Tawang. Crossing it - especially in winter when it is draped in snow - is an experience that feels genuinely epic.
• Ziro Valley: A UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate, Ziro is the homeland of the Apatani tribe. The terraced paddy fields, pine forests, and the warmth of the community are deeply captivating. The Ziro Music Festival (September) is one of India's finest.
• Namdapha National Park: One of the largest protected areas in India and one of the most biodiverse. Home to the snow leopard, clouded leopard, tiger, elephant, and an extraordinary range of birds.
• Dirang Valley: Warm hot springs, apple orchards, a medieval fort, and the Dirang Monastery make this a wonderful stop on the Tawang route.
• Bomdila: A small town with tremendous views of the Eastern Himalayas and a charming monastery. The apple orchards here are famous.
Every Indian citizen who is not a permanent resident of Arunachal Pradesh needs an Inner Line Permit to enter the state. This is a government-issued document that can now be obtained online through the official Arunachal Pradesh government portal, or in person at designated offices in Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi, and other cities. The process is straightforward, and the permit is usually issued within a few days. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP), which is a slightly different process and takes more time. Always carry multiple printed copies of your permit and keep them accessible, as checkpoints verify them at various entry points.
The best time to visit most of Arunachal Pradesh is between October and April, when the weather is clear, skies are blue, and mountain views are at their most dramatic. The months of March and April also bring spring blossoms and tribal festivals. Summer (May to June) is pleasant in lower areas but can be wet. The monsoon season from July to September brings extremely heavy rainfall across the state, making roads dangerous, rivers unfordable, and many mountain passes blocked. Unless you are specifically visiting for a monsoon experience or a festival that falls in this period, it is best to avoid travelling to remote areas during the rains.
The nearest major airport to most parts of Arunachal Pradesh is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam. From Guwahati, you can travel by road to most parts of the state. Itanagar and Pasighat also have their own small airports with limited flight connectivity from Kolkata and Guwahati. For Tawang, the journey from Guwahati takes about 12 to 14 hours by road, which is itself a spectacular drive through Assam and Arunachal's foothills. Hiring a private vehicle or joining a shared taxi is the most common and comfortable way to travel within the state, as public bus services are infrequent on many routes.
